Free State Festival screenings, Final Friday, fireworks and more upcoming Lawrence events

The holiday weekend in Lawrence will feature art, live music, dance and, of course, fireworks. Many local businesses and services will be closed or rescheduling around the Fourth of July holiday; check their websites or social media for details.

FRIDAY

• The 34th annual Outdoor Downtown Sculpture Exhibition’s opening reception takes place at 5:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Visitors Center, 812 Massachusetts St. Nine new artworks will be on display in downtown Lawrence; self-guided tours are available via the Otocast app. See explorelawrence.com for more details.

• Two film screening events are scheduled as part of the Free State Festival: “70s Lawrence: Three Short Films from a Groovy Time” at 5 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St. (free admission) and “We Were Famous, You Don’t Remember: The Embarrassment” at 7 p.m. at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St. ($22 for screening, Q&A and concert). CONVERGE, a dance performance, is also scheduled at 7:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St.; admission is $25.

• Final Friday exhibitions and events are scheduled throughout downtown Lawrence. The lineup includes:

• Final Friday Farewell event at RPG, 724 Massachusetts St.

• “The Magic You Can See” by photographer Patrick Emerson with live music from Levi Bates; 6 to 9 p.m., Phoenix Gallery, 825 Massachusetts St.

• “Transcendence: Truth in Nature” from artist John Hulsey; opening reception 5 to 9 p.m., Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St.

• “A Pig is Still a Pig” by ceramic artist Twiggy Boden; opening reception 6 to 9 p.m., Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St.

• “Kansas Skies,” by painter Craig Mellinger, 5 to 9 p.m., Lawrence Visitors Center, 812 Massachusetts St.

• Art Emergency, 721 E. Ninth St., displays several local artists’ work from 6 to 9 p.m. with live music at 6 p.m. and a film and sound experience by See Elem starting at 8 p.m.

• Art and music by Marvin Hunt and JP Coffin; 6 to 8 p.m., Crescent Moon Tasting Room, 732 Massachusetts St.

• Photography by Shawn Brackbill at Edward Jones, 888 New Hampshire St., Suite C.

• Solo exhibition by Susan Poer, music from Ian Cook and wine from Z&M Winery; 6 to 9 p.m., Art Love Collective, 646 Vermont St.

SATURDAY

• The Lawrence Farmers Market is from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. at 824 New Hampshire St. with fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, crafts and much more.

• Foster Village Lawrence’s lemonade stand kickoff party takes place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Centennial Park, 600 Rockledge Road. There will be face art, balloon twisting and more.

• A screening of “”ᏗᏬᏂᏏ (We Will Speak)” with a filmmaker Q&A, music and food is scheduled at 11 a.m. at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St., as part of the Free State Festival. The short film “Seed Warriors” will also be shown. Admission is $12.

• The Free State Festival presents “No Place Like Home: The Struggle Against Hate in Kansas” at 2 p.m. at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St., followed by a filmmaker Q&A session. Admission is $12.

• “Body and Soul,” a silent film with live music by DJ Spooky, rounds out the day’s Free State Festival events at 8 p.m. at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St. Admission is $22.

SUNDAY

• Organist Tandy Reussner and the Lawrence City Band present “Land of the Free,” a family-friendly concert and patriotic celebration benefiting Family Promise, at 4 p.m. at the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for veterans and students; children 12 and under get in free.

• The final day of the Free State Festival will feature three events at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St.:

• The interdisciplinary arts panel “Musings, Mimosas and Muffins” at 11 a.m.; admission is free.

• Screening of “Imagining the Indian: The Fight Against Native American Mascoting” at 1 p.m. with filmmaker Q&A; admission is $12.

• “The Unseen” at 4 p.m. with filmmaker Q&A; admission is $12.

• Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St., will host the final screening of the Free State Festival with “Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill” at 7 p.m. Admission is $22.

MONDAY

• Celebrate Independence Day a day early at the city’s free Summer Fest at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2110 Harper St. Live music, food truck sales and beer sales from Free State Brewing Company will begin at 4 p.m., and the community fireworks display is at approximately 9:30 p.m.

WEDNESDAY

• The Lawrence City Band continues its free summer concert series at 8 p.m. in South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St. Bring blankets and lawn chairs. In case of inclement weather, the concert will move indoors to the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive.
