State Rep. Dennis “Boog” Highberger was honored with an open government award from the Lawrence-Douglas County chapter of the League of Women Voters on Saturday.
According to a news release from the chapter, Highberger received the annual Helen Fluker Open and Accessible Government Award at a luncheon at Brandon Woods. The award, now in its 24th year, is given to a Douglas County resident who displays leadership in promoting citizens’ participation in government.
Highberger, a Democrat, has served since 2015 as one of Lawrence’s representatives in the Kansas House and was also previously a member of the Lawrence City Commission.
“We are fortunate in Kansas to have his voice standing up for open and accessible government in the Kansas Legislature and educating the public on how the Legislature actually works, and how it should work,” Carol Williamson, Lawrence-Douglas County League of Women Voters president, said in the release.
The award was established in 2000 in memory of Helen Fluker, who was active in both the League of Women Voters of Lawrence-Douglas County and the League of Women Voters of Kansas.
